Just as foreign investors are a varied group with different needs, Malaysia offers several different visa options that cater to a wide range of requirements.

Of course, all are welcome.
To help, we’ve prepared a directory of 11 different passes for foreign investors looking to:
- start and run a local business
- purchase property and / or semi-retire
- assess Malaysia’s viability before committing
Each is accompanied by a brief description, our thought on who it’s for, and links to full guides so you can read more on ones that fit your needs.
Let’s begin.
Investors starting & running a business
These options are designed for foreigners who want to actively participate in Malaysia’s economy by incorporating companies, managing operations, or building businesses locally. They tend to carry the highest requirements, and in exchange, offer the longest validity periods and freedom to bring over family members under dependent passes.
Category 1 Employment Pass (aka director visa)

Validity: 10 years (renewable)
Employment Passes are used by Malaysian companies to hire a foreign expatriate as a full-time employee, and Category 1 specifically is for top leadership positions including foreign directors and shareholders. In the context of a foreign investor, they first incorporate a foreign-owned local company, and their company then applies for a Category 1 EP.
It is the most common route for foreign investors looking to establish a local company and relocate here to run it as a director as:
- it is valid for up to 10 years and is renewable
- it allows bringing dependents for the duration of the EP
The main drawbacks are the high eligibility requirements, which we cover in full in our guide to Malaysia foreign director visas.
